How RMDs Are Calculated

Required Minimum Distributions are calculated using the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. The formula is straightforward:

RMD = Account Balance (Dec 31 prior year) / Life Expectancy Factor

The life expectancy factor decreases each year as you age, which means the percentage of your account you must withdraw increases over time. At age 73, the factor is 26.5 (about 3.77% of your balance). By age 85, the factor drops to 16.0 (about 6.25%).

If you have multiple retirement accounts, you must calculate the RMD for each account separately. However, for Traditional IRAs, you can take the total RMD amount from any one or combination of your IRAs. 401(k) RMDs must generally be taken from each 401(k) account individually.
